Lower risk businesses

If you are new in to business, you’ll need to ensure that you’re not diving in feet first, rather dipping your toe in the water with the lowest risk opportunity possible.

There are ways that you can ensure your business is at low risk of failure.

  1. Choose a sector where your services will be high in demand
Accountancy, cleaning, garden services, repairs and restoration will always be required in the fast-paced environment in which we live in
  2. Low set up costs can ensure all of your financial resource isn’t drained right away
Franchises are a good way at minimising set up costs as much of what is needed is included in the starter pack, and a lot of the hard work has already been done for you, such as creating and establishing a brand. Low set up costs also mean things like being able to work from a home office and no huge outlays in products, equipment or stock
  3. Speed and timing to realise your investment quicker
You’ll need to get your business off of the ground quickly to start realising your investment. A franchise can help you to do this with express, intensive training and a programatic launch. Timing is also important to ensure you get the maximum exposure for your new venture
  4. Locally service based
Service based businesses tend to stand you in a better position to succeed because you are competing locally, not nationally for customers.
  5. Consider what you enjoy and are good at
Your business is more likely to succeed if you are enjoy it and have the skills to operate it. Try to play on your strengths when choosing a business to make failure a very low risk when its down to your efforts

Having considered the above 5 points, you should be in a better position to choose a lower risk business opportunity.

If you need any further help on our franchise opportunity, you can call our franchise sales team on 0116 275 9005 or email them at franchisesales@servicemaster.co.uk for further help!

Why franchises fail

Not the usual type of post you would expect to see, but some franchises do fail. Here’s some reasons why that may happen and how you can prevent it from happening to you;

Unrealistic expectations

It’s possible that your expectations may not have been inline with the capabilities of the franchise. This for some makes the business a regret and a failure more likely.

Insufficient funds

A business can’t operate on thin air and sometimes a business owners funds may have run dry before they’ve even got started. Often putting strain on the business and not giving it the opportunity to grow before it is closed down.

Poor marketing

Marketing makes the phone ring. If you don’t start, or you stop, it has a detrimental effect on your business. Marketing is often undervalued in a business, particularly when other things ‘seem’ more important.

Lack of focus

Especially in the early days, a new business requires every bit of focus possible to get it up off of the ground. Distractions can often be to blame when a business begins to fail.

Low motivation

In business you need to be hungry to succeed. That hunger is what drives the business forward and keeps it moving forward. Without it, the business is likely to plateau or decline.

The reasons above are some of the most common, and the best franchisors can identify franchise owners in the early stages of them to help engage and coach them back in to operating a successful business.

At TruGreen, our franchise team are dedicated to ensuring that a TruGreen Franchise is right for every entrepreneur. If we don’t think it is, we’ll say so.
It’s in our interests to ensure that every entrepreneur has the same opportunity to succeed.

Jonathan adds a second van on the road!

Jonathan Bell is the proud owner of TruGreen Downlands covering Marlborough, Wantage, Lambourn, Faringdon and parts of Swindon. Almost in to his 5th year of business, Jonathan is expanding! He’s adding a second van on the road enabling him to serve even more customers with his professional lawn care services.

Jonathan needed to address capacity in the business, having now reached the number of active customers where to grow the business further he would need a second van on the road.

Jonathan has employed a technician in the past year in allowing for him to improve his time management, while operating out of one van, but has now employed a second full time technician. Both have completed the recent technical training course, and have also completed their PA1/PA6 qualification too. This will then allow for them to operate out of the second van, allowing for the increased capacity that Jonathan needs in meeting the demand for TruGreen services and in maintaining the strong growth in the business, which has seen him achieve record monthly revenue on a number of occasions across the Golden Quarter (also known as Spring/early Summer).

This summarises the progress that Jonathan has made in moving to a second van, which he will have wrapped in the TruGreen brand, maintaining Brand awareness.

All of the progress highlighted above has been made possible with Jonathans enthusiasm and determination, coupled with our support and guidance.

TruGreen presents an amazing opportunity to build a scalable business in an established market. Jonathan is one of our many franchise owners to prove it!

5 Questions to ask a Franchisor

The research process to buying a franchise is an important one. There are a minimum of 5 questions to ask a franchisor to help you in this process. These questions aren’t the typical questions relating to financials and what you get for your investment.

These 5 questions are ones that could potentially help you to make your decision based on your human needs.

  1. In what areas do you offer support?
Why – You might be strong in some areas of business, but not others. You need to ensure you’re strong in all
Our answer – We offer support in all areas of the business.
  2. Are there any existing franchise owners who have come from a similar background?
Why – You can then ask for their story and if you could be put in touch with them
Our answer – We absolutely can match you to existing franchisees in our networks and of course, you can chat with them.
  3. Do you have a ‘buddy scheme’?
Why – Partnering up with a more established business owner can help you to follow in their footsteps, learn from their mistakes and grow
    Our answer – We do!
  4. Are there any additional training opportunities?
Why – The initial training might not be enough, could be too overwhelming and over too quickly for some
Our answer – Absolutely, we offer continuous refresher and new training opportunities.
  5. What communal events do you have and do you recognise achievements?
Why – Communal events represent togetherness and recognising achievements fosters motivation
Our answer – We do, large events at least once per year and regional events quarterly. Our awards our annual too.

Through asking the above 5 questions, you’re giving the franchisor the opportunity to respond to your human needs.

If there’s anything else we can help with, most questions have been asked and there’s no such thing as a silly question so ask away.

TruGreen Downlands is crowned a winner in the Great British Franchisee Awards!

Owned and operated by Jonathan Bell, TruGreen Downlands scooped a prestigious award this week which recognises excellence in franchising.

After setting up his business in 2016, Jonathan Bell has taken TruGreen Downlands from strength to strength as well as shown resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic which forced many small businesses companies to close their doors for a short while.

Offering lawncare services throughout Swindon, Wantage, Devizes, Hungerfood and more, TruGreen Lawncare is everyone’s one-stop-shop for professional and highly-rated lawncare. From Moss Treatments, Scarification, Weed Control to lawn Pest Management and more – TruGreen Downlands offers it all.

Hosted by Which Franchise, the Great British Franchisee Awards focuses on the people who have made UK franchising a success.  They recognise the outstanding performance of franchisees, regardless of the size of their business or the sector they work in.

Record breaking Spring for TruGreen

TruGreen celebrate a record breaking Spring, delivering lawn care services, safely to their customers.

As a business providing outdoor services, we’ve been fortunate enough to be able to deliver our professional lawn care services to customers safely, at a distance throughout the whole of Spring.

Whilst more of us are spending more time at home looking out on to the garden, the need for a lush green lawn has increased! Not only this, but the individuals who would normally aim to look after their lawn themselves, have chosen to spend the time that they do have, doing other things.

We’re pleased to report that this can be seen in our network turnover for the Spring season. Our network turnover has reached a new record! Not only that, but it has beaten it by a whopping 10%! But why?

  • TruGreen are the worlds largest lawn care company
  • Our brand has been established for over 30 years in the UK
  • We have thousands of happy customers
  • Support in lawn care, marketing and sales is second to none!
  • Marketing leading business management technology
  • Our results speak for themselves!

If you’d like to find out for yourself, you could try a lawn care service in your local area by visiting our consumer page www.trugreen.co.uk or we could tell you more about our franchise opportunity and what benefits it could offer you as an owner rather than a customer.

New customer acquisition records

Whilst we navigate the ‘new normal’ it’s perfectly acceptable to question the ability to attract and gain new lawn care customers during these uncertain times. We’ve had franchisees join us throughout this uncertainty and it’s always good to see how they’re getting on with the challenges most businesses are facing.

As part of our regular contact with franchise owners we’ve established some great results for our newest franchise owners and we are thrilled to share these with you.

TruGreen West Sussex have been in business 7 months and in this short period of time have welcomed 160 regular customers to the brand and their business in particular. This phenomenal growth is down to the proud business owner, Dominic Haydon. His investment in marketing and delivering great lawn care services has meant that his business has surpassed the expectations of the business model and he isn’t looking to stop any time soon. Dominic has also received many glowing 5* reviews from his customers further promoting his great work to others. We’re looking forward to checking in with Dominic at his 12 month point!

TruGreen Hampshire South enjoyed a growth of 70 customers within just 6 weeks! The duo completed their training academy and set on with attracting customers to their new venture. Alwyn and Sandra have also surpassed the assumptions of the model with their effort and there is no stopping them now.

Our franchise model is a modest illustration of what can be achieved by operating the business following our business model. It’s great to be able to demonstrate that higher rewards can be achieved through amplifying the model and driving the business further forward.

The benefits of working outdoors

TruGreen presents a fantastic opportunity to work in the great outdoors enabling franchise owners to soak in the natural beauty of the many gardens they will come to treat throughout the year.

Latest research confirms that being outside makes us happy according to Forbes.com. Not only does it make us happier, but it also helps to:

Operating a business in the great outdoors helps you to achieve the five benefits listed above, all whilst making a living and building an investment for the future.

As TruGreen is an all-year-round business, you’ll experience all of the seasons from the glorious and sunny, to the crisp and fresh winter days. It’s the best of both worlds. In extreme weather conditions such as snow and heatwaves, we don’t operate to full capacity and often change up treatments to accommodate for days not worked. Therefore, revenue and productivity aren’t greatly negatively impacted.

So if you’re looking for a way to escape the corporate 9-5 office, or even ‘home office’ job, contact our team today to discuss our available territories and next discovery sessions.

Franchisee Focus – Robert Grant

When looking to join a franchise, it’s a good idea to do some research too! Especially the kind of research where you find out how others have experienced their franchise journey.

We chat to Robert Grant of TruGreen Lincolnshire about his franchise journey over the last 6 years. Robert initially joined the network after a family friend was looking to retire. After purchasing the resale opportunity and growing it over a few years, Robert decided to further invest in a second territory covering remaining parts of Lincolnshire.

We asked Robert a few questions to help prospective franchisees to research our opportunity.

Q. Why did you choose TruGreen to partner up with?

A. “The reason I chose TruGreen was because it offered me a self-employed working basis and a better way of life.”

Q. What made you want to own your own business?

A. “A member of the of the family was retiring and it seemed to be a good opportunity.”

Q. What would your advice be to someone looking to start their own business?

A. “Go for it there are lots of good opportunities to learn and grow.”

Q. How has your experience been with TruGreen so far?

A. “Ive enjoyed having my own TruGreen franchise as its helped me not only further my lawn care skills but has allowed me to grow as a small business.”

If you’re looking for opportunities in the lawn care sector, look no further. We have many opportunities available throughout the UK and can put you in touch with franchise owners who have similar qualities and aspirations to those of your own.

Franchisee Focus – Jonathan Bell

Jonathan Bell is the proud owner of TruGreen Downlands covering Marlborough, Lambourn, Wantage and parts of North Wessex. Jonathan has owned his business for just coming up to 5 years and answered the following questions for us:

Q. What made you want to own your own business?

A. “I have always liked the idea of running my own business and after 30 years of managing other peoples businesses I found myself in a position where I could fulfil that dream.”

Q. Why did you choose to partner up with TruGreen franchise?

A. “I chose TruGreen as the franchisor because I felt that the strongest part of set up was the technical support. After years in business I wanted to know that I could access quality technical advice and support about lawncare. That said, the ServiceMaster corporate structure was attractive to me because it echoed previous experiences from working with large companies.”

Q. What would your advice be to someone looking to start a franchise?

A. “My advice would be to share what worked for me. I looked at a number of different types of franchise before I focussed on lawncare. Then I visited as many franchisors in lawncare as I could. This allowed me to understand the variations, strengths and weaknesses of each offer and ultimately finding the one I thought was the best fit for me.”

Q. Do you have a testimonial for your partnership with us?

A. “From the first contact my dealings with TruGreen have been professional. This continues to be the case. I chose TruGreen because I thought that they offered the best support around the technical aspects of lawncare and I have not been disappointed.”

We thank Jonathan for his time in chatting with us and we hope that you find his answers helpful in your decision making process.

Franchisee Focus – Mike Lethbridge

Mike Lethbridge joined the TruGreen franchise network back in 2015 leaving a career in IT and financial services. After deciding he wanted to be in business for himself, not by himself, his research lead him to TruGreen franchise amongst others and the rest is history! You can watch his intro video here.

Over the last 6 years Mike has not only perfected his trade, but has built up a great business built from his lawn care expertise and customer service excellence.

“I needed to know I was investing in a company I could work with, after meeting with Steve and the team, I soon realised I would be confident in the service I was delivering with the TruGreen support team behind me.”

Steve Welch is the TruGreen Brand Leader and has over 40 years experience in lawn care alone! Steve has worked closely with Mike in sharing his love and passion for the brand and the sector and this has clearly rubbed off on franchise owner Mike.

As expected, Mike is extremely passionate about the brand and the results he achieves, as such, he has his own YouTube channel where you can learn more about Mike, his business and his specialist lawn care services. Go check out and support his fantastic page ‘Deep Green Something Lawn Care’ here.

If you’re interested to learn more about the brand and the wonderful world of lawn care, a good place to start would be Mike’s fantastic YouTube page.

It’s raining it’s pouring, TruGreen are storming

The weather doesn’t stop our franchise owners from operating their businesses, in fact, they use it to their advantage.

A TruGreen franchise is a year round franchise opportunity whereby, treatments can be undertaken all months of the year. This being said, the weather is a challenge that franchise owners must overcome to ensure that they are able to take care of lawns all year round and avoid delaying treatments making them less effective.

So if you’re worrying that the wet weather forecast will prevent you from undertaking the roles within your business fear not!

Fertilisers – Need water to work, so rain helps them to work, making lawns grow and flourish

Pest treatments – Are biological and also require water to ensure they work effectively

Weed killers – Only need to remain dry for 1 hour after they have been applied, so timing is key

We also have lots of ‘wet weather’ uniform choices to help our franchise owners to keep dry and warm in the more challenging weather.

Don’t let the weather put you off, contact us today to discuss our available territories in a ‘growing’ sector, the warmer weather is just around the corner!

Welcome to the network Sandra & Alwyn of TruGreen Hampshire South

Alwyn and Sandra have had both worked in the corporate world for most of their working lives, with Alwyn being most recently involvedin the Marine Sector before deciding TruGreen was an option for them. They decided one day they could jointly develop a strong business to be proud of and went on the search for greener pastures and that’s where they came across TruGreen and the rest was history!

We decided to choose TruGreen as we wanted to work outdoors in a sector that had significant growth potential. No pun intended!” Said Alwyn, Co-owner of TruGreen Hampshire South.

After much research we found the lawncare industry fulfilled these criteria. Right from the initial phone call we were particularly impressed by the knowledge of Steve Welch, the TruGreen Brand Manager” Added Alwyn.

As the two of them embark away from their journey in the corporate world, it was important that their venture had a more “family” feel to it, whilst also remaining professional and respected.

Both have a clear plan of how to develop and take the business forwards through the levels. Alwyn will lead the operational aspects of the TruGreen business, working on the lawns to help customers achieve a lawn of their dreams, whilst Sandra will look after the admin and accounts, whilst also helping with work on the lawns– a role she says she’s better suited to than Alwyn!

For the first year of business, Alwyn and Sandra have high targets and hope to achieve beautiful green grass for all, with no weeds!

It is great to welcome Alwyn and Sandra Rees to TruGreen Professional Lawncare, and I am sure that their focussed approach to business and in-depth knowledge of the local area, will prove another major asset to the ever-growing TruGreen Network, in offering our customers the very best in bespoke lawncare.” Added TruGreen Brand Manager, Steve Welch

Magnificent March

Whilst the UK endeavours to find new normality, life in TruGreen has remained almost unaffected as the ability for our businesses to operate outdoors safely and at a social distance, has meant that services have been able to continue.

As we’re recommended to go outdoors to socialise, it seems many individuals have chosen to take better care of their lawns and have reached out to TruGreen now more than ever.

We have some exciting news to share for March:

  • March saw the largest number of enquiries for lawn care in the last 3 years!
  • Franchise owners were seeing as many as 22 enquiries per day!
  • Website visitors were up 42% year to date
  • Some franchise owners reporting revenue as high as £20k and above
  • Network revenue up 29% on March 2020

Early figures show that April will continue to be a great month for the TruGreen network. Let’s hope for an ‘Amazing April’!

Real Franchise Story – Our first year in business, through the pandemic

The last 12 months have been challenging for most, and when Peter & Michelle Lewis chose to begin their lawn care business in March 2020, they had no idea what the future would hold for them once the news of the pandemic broke.

Fortunately, with their mindset and our support, we have a good news story to share.

Here’s what Peter & Michelle had to say about their first 12 months owning a TruGreen lawn care franchise.

“So the end of the first year, and what a first year. Within 2 weeks of launching we had the first Covid lockdown and we had no idea what that would mean for us. Initial reaction was that we couldn’t go out so couldn’t work, a potential disaster with bills to pay and no revenue. As the detail of the lockdown became clearer over the next 48 hours we discovered that we could work – in fact, at least in Wales, working in gardens was listed as one of the trades that could legally continue.

And then the phone started ringing, emails started coming in, and before we knew it we had lots of quotes to do, customers to service, products and machinery to learn more about and BMS, the computer system that runs the business. There were times when it was almost overwhelming, but we always had Steve on the end of the phone and great support from other TruGreen owners. The Thursday fortnightly ‘Teams’ call was really welcome and makes us feel really part of a team.

Just over 12 months down the line, we have well over 100 active customers, but we are still learning. We look forward to every new day as no two are the same. We’ve lost over a stone each, spend most days outdoors and get to see a lot more of our family. We still have problems packing the van from time to time and some of the days are very long, but we love it.

Our biggest headache – well the way we are growing we may need to decide next year whether we employ someone and have a second van.

What’s the best thing about the business – it’s the customers. We have so many lovely customers that are genuinely grateful to see us and when you turn up and see a wonderful lawn that we have created, it’s a great feeling!”

This is a tremendous genuine account of two of our newest business owners to join the TruGreen network and I think you will agree it is testimony to the fantastic franchise owners in the network and the level of support that they receive.

If you would like to join the TruGreen network, contact our franchise sales team today on 0116 275 9005 for information on available territories and next training dates.
