Robert Grant of TruGreen South Lincolnshire took 5 minutes out of his busy lawn care schedule to chat to us about his TruGreen journey so far.

TruGreen North East joins the network!

A Longframlington businessman has made a switch from working in procurement in the housing sector to professional lawn care as he launches his own franchise business to serve customers across the North East. TG-North-East

Andrew Jack has undergone significant training with international franchise TruGreen Professional LawnCare, which is a franchise of one of the UK’s leading and largest multi-brand franchisors ServiceMaster, and he is the new owner of TruGreen North East.

With over 18 years’ experience working in the housing sector, heading up the procurement and purchasing department, Andrew made the move into lawn care for an exciting challenge. He said: “For 18 years now, I’ve worked behind a desk and in the housing sector. Late last year I decided it was time for a change and tried to incorporate my hobbies and business into one. That’s when TruGreen first became a possibility for me, and I haven’t looked back since!”

“I enjoy being outdoors; I love gardening and playing golf, so to me the opportunities with TruGreen was a no brainer. May 2014: ServiceMaster employee scoops national franchise award

Hannah Banfield, head of marketing at ServiceMaster Limited, one of the UK’s biggest franchisors, has scooped a national franchise award at the 2014 NatWest Encouraging Women into Franchising (EWIF) Awards.

Collecting the Women Franchisor Employee of the Year award at the prestigious ceremony held at RBS House in London, Hannah was up against tough competition from national franchisors, Extra Help and diddi dance. The award, sponsored by The Franchise Show, was given to Hannah as a result of consistent positive results, most notably a highly successful online national campaign that resulted in a 21% increase in visitor traffic and a local marketing plan for one specific business that achieved over 35% growth on the previous year.

Hannah said: “I’m so pleased to receive this award; it’s a real honour to be recognised amongst all the excellent franchisors in the UK. ServiceMaster is doing great things and my team has worked extremely hard to get to where we are today.”

2nd April 2014: ServiceMaster Ltd appoints new UK Managing Director

ServiceMaster Ltd, which operates Merry Maids, ServiceMaster Clean, Furniture Medic and TruGreen in the UK, announces that Alan Lewin has been promoted to the role of Managing Director. Alan, who previously held the title of Business Development Director for nearly four years, replaces Steve Emmerson.

“Alan is a natural choice for the role of Managing Director,” said Tom Coba, President of ServiceMaster and based in the USA. “He is a driver of change in people and processes and is adept at discovering and implementing the level of innovation needed.  Alan is focused on increasing sales for all the brands through strategic thinking.”

Alan joined ServiceMaster Ltd in the UK in 2005 as Director of Business Development to focus on driving the growth and market share of ServiceMaster Clean and Furniture Medic franchise networks through its National Account programme. He was then appointed, in June 2010, to the UK executive leadership team as Business Development Director. This role involved wider strategic and tactical responsibilities in business development and leadership for the growth, and retention, of UK revenues for all ServiceMaster brands serving the commercial and domestic markets.

Alan’s sales and management career started with Minolta, Canon and Xerox. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration from De Montfort University in Leicester.

17th February 2014 – TruGreen remains part of ServiceMaster in the UK

Further to the recent announcement from our colleagues in the USA about the separation of TruGreen from ServiceMaster, we’d like to clarify that this situation is not one to have been replicated in the UK. Here, TruGreen Professional Lawn Care remains very much a part of ServiceMaster.

The decision to remove TruGreen from the ServiceMaster portfolio in the USA was made by Clayton Dubilier & Rice (CD&R), the owners of the ServiceMaster Company towards the end of last year (December 2013). Whilst CD&R still own TruGreen, they are just no longer a part of the US ServiceMaster Group.

Here in the UK, TruGreen continues to look to its future growth and development whilst remaining part of the ServiceMaster UK Group and ‘Family of Brands’. TruGreen customers, franchise owners and potential franchisees are unaffected by these changes.

10th February 2014 – ServiceMaster Ltd celebrates 55 years in business!

ServiceMaster Ltd is celebrating 55 years of franchising this year. The group which started trading in the UK in 1959 has 320 franchisees over 850 licensed areas and owns ServiceMaster Clean, Merry Maids, TruGreen and Furniture Medic. Part of the multi-million dollar American franchise giant ServiceMaster which has 7,000 franchisees in over 40 countries, the UK arm has an annual network turnover of £50 million.

Based for the last 10 years in Wigston, Leicestershire, the company is led by Managing Director Steve Emmerson, who has been in franchising for 32 years and MD of ServiceMaster Ltd for the last five. Steve was a previous board member and chair of the bfa and currently represents franchising on the CBI’s SME committee. ServiceMaster Ltd were founding members of the bfa, helping to draw up the code of ethics which are still used today.

Asked what he puts the success of the ServiceMaster Ltd group down to Steve says, ‘Our business model; we are an ethical company to work with, we understand that a franchise is like a marriage between two partners, each with their own skills and responsibilities. We pin our values to the wall and act towards them.’

The company’s mission statement, drawn up in 1929 by ServiceMaster’s founder in the US Marion E. Wade, reflects Steve’s words; ‘Excel with customers, Help people develop, Grow profitably, Honour God in what we do.’

Steve says, ‘Our corporate objectives are not prescriptive in any way in terms of faith or the lack of it, they encompass, however, the spirit and essence of our credo and are fundamental to the way we conduct ourselves and our business.’

Reflecting on the tough economic times the country has recently experienced Steve says, ‘There are definitely signs of recovery; we’ve come through the recession as strong if not stronger than most because we had solid business models in place.’

Looking forward to the next 55 years Steve says,‘Our models are robust and thrive on leading our sectors in technology and innovation. Our future will see us embrace new technologies, the likes of which will increase our efficiency within our market, and champion new communication routes with customers and prospective customer alike, whilst not losing sight of our fundamental franchising foundation.’

ServiceMaster Ltd was delighted to reach the finals of the prestigious Franchisor of the Year award hosted by the British Franchise Association in London on 4th July.  With over 900 franchisor brands operating in the UK and after a thorough judging process of 13 shortlisted companies, this remarkable achievement saw ServiceMaster Ltd as one of six finalists in this award category.

The company holds over 800 franchises in the UK across four major ServiceMaster brands; domestic cleaners Merry Maids, carpet and upholstery cleaners ServiceMaster Clean, furniture restorers Furniture Medic and lawn care operation TruGreen.

Hannah Banfield, Head of Marketing at ServiceMaster Ltd shared her feelings on reaching the finals, “It was a really great night and we’re so proud to be have made it to the final six out of so many other franchisors. Congratulations to the companies that won, and although we are disappointed we’re motivated and working hard towards more opportunities that may come our way in the future.”

The British Franchise Association’s HSBC Franchisor of the Year award celebrates the outstanding practice and achievements of the country’s leading franchisors, especially reflecting on the dedication and commitment of exceptional companies from a wide variety of business sectors. These national awards aim to select companies that illustrate the thriving industry of franchising in the UK and were held at the Honourable Artillery Company in London this year.

17th May 2013 – EWIF success for TruGreen’s Karen Burdett!

Karen Burdett of TruGreen Milton Keynes and West Northants is celebrating after winning the title of ‘New Woman Franchisee of the Year’ at the EWIF (Encouraging Women into Franchising) Awards, held in London on 16th May.

It was just last April when Karen left her position in the commercial, customer focused environment she had worked in for 20 years to join the franchise network as TruGreen’s only female franchise owner-operator.  To triumph as winner is the reflection of sheer hard work and early success.

Karen reported fantastic figures after only a few weeks, with an enquiry to quote conversion rate of 99 per cent. Of those quoted, a staggering 96 per cent became customers.

Lawn care is tough, physical work and not for the faint-hearted, but Karen wasn’t fazed in the slightest and showed grit, determination and a genuine desire to get started.

It was this hard work and achievement in this male dominated industry that no doubt contributed to her victory. Karen says, “I’m honoured to have reached the finals of these awards, especially after such a short time as a business owner but to win is incredible!  I have to thank ServiceMaster Ltd and the TruGreen team for all their help and support.”
