It involves the franchisor, who owns the brand, business model and proven systems for success, and the franchisee, who (via a franchise agreement) can trade under the brand.

This is, therefore, a contractual relationship.

To get technical, the contract binding the two parties is the “franchise”. However, that term usually refers to the business operated by the franchisee.

Instead, what is often referred to as franchising is the process of creating and safeguarding the brand and distributing its systems.

Types of franchising
