What is Franchising?

Franchising: Explained

TruGreen is the world’s largest lawn care franchise. But what is franchising?

Before you dive into the details of the opportunity here at TruGreen UK, or indeed, at any franchise, it’s essential to understand what franchising is and how it can help you in business.

In this blog post, we’ll walk you through the A-Z of franchising, including what it is, and how it can benefit you.

What is franchising?

The British Franchise Association (BFA), of which we have been members for 20 years, the UK’s leading franchising trade association, defines franchising as primarily a relationship.

This business relationship is at the heart of all franchising.

It involves the franchisor, who owns the brand, business model and proven systems for success, and the franchisee, who (via a franchise agreement) can trade under the brand.

This is, therefore, a contractual relationship.

To get technical, the contract binding the two parties is the “franchise”. However, that term usually refers to the business operated by the franchisee.

Instead, what is often referred to as franchising is the process of creating and safeguarding the brand and distributing its systems.

Types of franchising

TruGreen UK is an example of Business Format Franchising, the most commonly practiced form of franchise agreement.

Ahead of:

  • Product Franchising: Franchisees who exclusively sell or distribute the franchisor’s products.
  • Manufacturing Franchising: Third-party manufacturers obtain exclusive rights to produce and distribute products with the franchisor’s name and trademark.

What do you get from a franchise?

Like other forms of franchising, in a business format franchise, the franchisor provides the franchisee with its trade name, products and services.

However, it also provides its franchisees with an entire system for operating the business.

At TruGreen, this includes training, starter pack, operating manuals, brand guidance and standards, marketing strategy and hands-on one-to-one support, exclusive software and Business Management System and business advisory support from us, as the franchisor.
